The word “advent” means “coming” or “arrival”. Advent is also a name given to a season – the four Sundays proceeding Christmas. Historically, the season was a period of preparation for membership in the church on Christmas Sunday.
Through the years the Advent season became a time of general preparation for the Christ-Mass and for special services to celebrate Jesus’ birth.
Today the Advent season is a time of preparation, penance and confession and marks the beginning of the Christian calendar year.
