What is Christmas All About?

Have you ever asked what is the reason behind Christmas? Why, with all the choices open to God, has the Creator of the Universe chosen to get so involved with us? Certainly, the answer is not to be found in any attraction we may possess. The answer is simply, Love. That is why we are told, above all put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Love does not make the world go ’round as though history were in senseless rotation; no, love makes the world move on.
The love that moves us on is the Love that first we knew at Christmas. At Christmas, in a small town just down the hill from Jerusalem, the vows were exchanged. For better or for worse, in sickness and in health: God became man. The very center of all that is, all that was, and all that will be, became one with human history — with your history and mine. The story of the Universe is a love story.
We’re still learning what it all means. The First Century Christians were confused on some points. Even the Apostles didn’t understand the full implications of the Good News. But through the confusions, disappoint-ments, defeats and long times of waiting, we know the truth of the decision revealed at Bethlehem. And thus, we are strong and unafraid in the quiet confidence of Christmas.
Let us repeat — as a community of faith, we joyfully celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus. As a community of faith, we can’t wait to say again, and again and again: The word was made flesh, He lived among us, and we saw His glory, the glory that is His as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
May the peace of Christ be with you this blessed Christmas. Merry Christmas to you all.
